Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Boxing Gloves - A Comprehensive Review

As boxers and avid martial artists, you should care about the type of gear and equipment that you use on a daily basis for your training needs. You want to make sure that you’re throwing those 1-2 combinations with precision and power without worrying about hurting your hands or wrists. From our experience using dozens of different brands of boxing and muay thai gloves, the Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Boxing Gloves are one of the absolute best gloves on the market that you can choose from.

The Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Boxing Gloves are a set of gloves that not only pad your hands with superior comfort, but also protect your wrists from unnecessary recoil that cheaply made boxing gloves might provide you. We tested these gloves for three months to ensure we provide as much information about them with thoroughness and honesty. Keep reading to below to check out our comprehensive review:

Our Glove Testing Outline

As an online retailer, we vow to not list any product for sale that we (the staff) would not personally use ourselves. Because we’ve gone through the experience of purchasing sets of boxing gloves or hand wraps only to be met with disappointment upon entering the ring or stepping foot on the mats, we have created this platform not only as a source for your boxing, mma, and combat sports needs, but also as a resource that you can trust who will always sell and recommend top-quality products. To achieve this, we’ve created a testing guideline for boxing gloves that reviews each pair of gloves in the following areas:

  • Quality and Craftsmanship
  • Durability and Longevity
  • Comfortability: Casual Training
  • Comfortability: Hard Training
  • Style

Quality and Craftsmanship

Upon opening the original packaging that comes directly from the Cleto Reyes factory in Mexico, you’re greeted with a noticeable scent of premium leather from the materials that the gloves are made with. Each pair of Cleto Reyes gloves that is sold through ATL Fight Shop are hand-made and 100% authentic. The gloves feel like a top-quality premium product from the exterior, and have a nicely comfortable and snug fit once you slip the gloves on. The velcro strap is strong and secure. After going a couple of rounds on the bag or pads, you may need to put a little extra effort in unstrapping the velcro strap.

What Are Cleto Reyes Gloves Made From?

Every product manufactured by Cleto Reyes is hand-made and made-to-order. Each pair of gloves is made with high quality animal hides, strong velcro, foam rubber and bristle. The foam rubber and bristle allows you to throw those one-two combinations or haymakers ensuring a comfortable punch every time. According to the article "Los Guantes Hechos A Mano" (translates to "The Hand-Made Gloves") published on National Geographic En Español, “While the foam rubber returns to its original state after each hit, the bristle becomes harder and harder throughout the fight.”

Durability and Longevity

Have you ever had a pair of gloves you accidentally left in your smelly gym bag over the weekend, only to start training Monday and be greeted to a gross smelling pair of gloves? Yeah, we know, it sucks. Well, to our surprise, the Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Gloves surprisingly held its premium leather scent, even after two and a half months of regular hard training. We would leave the gloves tangled with a drenched-of-sweat hoodie in the gym bag and still the gloves smelled like new. With that said, we’re not advocating for you to ditch your basic hygiene principles, but in case you forget to crack open that gym bag before taking a weekend break, don’t stress.

In terms of material durability, after two and a half months of regular hard training, the leather of the glove continued to hold up very well. The fitment still feels like a day-one glove, throwing bombs on the bag and pads feel just as good as when we first cracked open the packaging. The only material flaw we can pin point is that on the white model, there was some slight color dye that probably transferred after being in direct contact in a gym bag with a black hoodie. But these issues were not consistent with other color models (red and black models were tested by others on our team).

How Long Do These Cleto Reyes Gloves Last?

It’s hard to give an exact date of when you can expect your Cleto Reyes gloves to give out, but if we had to estimate, with an even mix of casual and hard training, 3-4 times per week, your Cleto Reyes gloves could last you between 2-3+ years. That, of course, depends on whether you feel like switching up and trying out a new pair of boxing/thai gloves.

Comfortability

When we began testing the Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Gloves, we wanted to make sure we tested the gloves under two different environments: casual training and hard training.

Casual Training

During casual training, which includes basic boxing, kickboxing and muay thai classes where we worked primarily on technique and technical/light sparring, we found it a little tedious to constantly put on and take off the gloves throughout the classes due to the strong velcro that keeps your wrists secure. The gloves felt a little heavier than traditional 16oz gloves from brands such as Everlast and Title Boxing, but that can definitely be a good thing if you’re trying to condition your shoulders to keep your hands up for longer periods of time.

Hard Training

During hard training, this is where the Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Gloves proved their worth. During heavy bag work, throwing overhand rights, hard hooks and uppercuts felt comfortable. We did not notice any negative recoil to the hands or wrists that lower quality gloves are notoriously known to provide. During pad work, although the gloves felt a little heavier than other 16 oz gloves, it did feel like it helped in improving hand speed.

Lastly, where the weight of the gloves were really present was during sparring. In the beginning, generally after four hard rounds of sparring, we found ourselves lowering our hands to give our shoulders a quick rest before re-engaging with our opponents. Over time, we got used to the weight of the gloves and this no longer became an issue. The gloves are pretty well padded with the foam rubber and bristle that absorbing punches during defensive work was not a terrible experience. To our surprise, during muay thai and kickboxing sparring, the gloves did an excellent job in absorbing the impact of potential head kicks.

Style

We would be lying to ourselves if we said that the style and look of potential boxing gloves don’t play a factor in our (yes, you and me) decision to pick and choose our next pair of boxing gloves. As boxers and martial artists, we should make sure that the gear we invest in not only serves a clear functional purpose and is made of the highest quality materials, but that also looks good and makes us feel good when we train. When’s the last time you didn’t feel good mentally and had an amazing training session?

With that said, the Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Gloves offer a very classic look, depending on the color style you choose from, which is sure to compliment many of your existing training wardrobe. We offer a number of color variants at ATL Fight Shop that you can choose from, including the timeless Red, Black, and White options, as well as the flashier Orange and Green options, with the Blue option coming to our store soon. Cleto Reyes does manufacture more interesting options, but as we’ve said before, we wouldn’t sell anything to you that we ourselves wouldn’t wear.

Are These Gloves A Good Fit For You?

Consider the Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop training gloves as your next pair of boxing gloves if you’re training regularly (minimum 3 times per week) and you’re serious about your boxing or martial arts training. These gloves will serve you well in protecting your hands and wrists. These gloves can also be recommended for beginners as it would allow you to begin your boxing or martial arts journey with some of the top gloves on the market today. You want to ensure you’re training with quality and timeless gear that will hold up for the foreseeable future.

The Cleto Reyes Hook and Loop Training Gloves are available at ATL Fight Shop at $199.99. We go through the trouble of sourcing these authentic pair of boxing gloves and import each pair directly from their factory in Mexico.
